Sowing Seeds
The green house is FULL! We have many kinds of broccoli, cabbage, collards, eggplant, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, onions, peppers, spinach, swiss chard, and tomatoes seeded, germinating, and ready for frost free in one month! We started shaping some raised beds in the high tunnel and direct sowed lettuce, spinach, arugula, scallions, carrots, radishes, beets, and turnips. We used a broad fork, hoe, garden rake, and Johnny's Bed Preparation Rake with Row Markers to make nice, loose, even rows with accurate spacing. The Jang JP-1 seeder was so great for precision seeding, simple and efficient for us physically and to save our seeds for where we want them so they can have a healthy, happy life.
Imagine what it's like to be a seed. A tiny speck containing a history, a story of your past, with intentions of a future following a map to growing and setting fruit to repeat your tasty tale for people and animals to enjoy. My favorite thing about farming is having intimate time to ponder the wonders of life. Seeds are miraculous! What does it take for a seed to grow? Well, there had to be a long history of plants reproducing, passing traits from generation to generation. There must have been good soil, plenty of light and water, insects or wind to fertilize. For farmers and gardeners, it means someone loved this fruit and wanted to share its story with others.
Everything started from a seed. You, me, trees, animals, water starts as a drop but becomes an ocean. Dust particles in space become compressed by gravity and shock waves collapsing on themselves in a nuclear reaction of self consumption creating a life that sustains and warms more Life.
When we have the opportunity to observe nature closely, we can find many lessons to apply to our lives in a greater way. Appreciating the power of Seeds, and of Life leads us to be mindful of our impact on the parts of the whole. Our thoughts and intentions are like Seeds, our actions and our speech our are like Plants, if we want good Fruits we need good Seed and healthy Plants. May you keep yourself well fertilized, and your seeds be shared and treasured like heirlooms.
