Marching into Spring
Sorry to keep you all hanging. Hopefully you’re all following Sammy on Instagram and Facebook for a more regularly schedule update. But here is what we’ve been up to, other than fighting upper respiratory infections…
This is the first group of outdoor peas going in on March 13. Sammy just put in our second outdoor group the beginning of this week. Can’t wait for some fresh Sugar Snap Peas. We like to direct sow radishes along side of our peas.
Here is Sammy watering the tunnel a couple of weeks ago.
Finally the wind died down, so we uncovered our first outdoor direct sown plot so we could cultivate. Beets, Turnips, Carrots, Arugula, Spicy Mix, Lettuce Mix, Spinach, Superfood Mix, all weeded and switched out from frost protecting row cover to insect netting.

The farm is filling up fast. Lettuce heads, Kohlrabi, Choys, and bunching greens all going in after the next bout of wind.
April 9th we prepped our second plot and got it direct sown with our third succession of greens and roots. It all begins with pealing back the tarp and broadforking the beds. We rake them out and pop in the seeds. After the rain comes we’ll cover it all up.
Broadforking is great for loosening these deeply rooted thistles. Sammy is removing them so we can get our potatoes in without competition. We are growing twice as many potatoes so be ready.
The propagation house is wall to wall with plants. Much of which is ready to plant once the threat of 15+ mpg wind is past later this week. Once we make some room, we’ll be filling it right back up with our third succession.
We look forward to seeing you all at the farmers markets next week (April 18 at Eagleview and April 20 at Malvern). Click below to see who else will be at markets. Thanks for checking in, and we’ll keep you posted.
